Brokenheartsville

From "Man With A Memory", © 2002, Universal.

He wore that cowboy hat to cover up his horns.
Sweet-talkin' forked tongue half a temptin' charm.
Before I turned around, that girl was gone.
All I can say is: "Bartender, pour me somethin' strong."

Here's to the past, they can kiss my glass.
I hope she's happy with him.
Here's to the girl, who wrecked my world,
That angel who did me in.
I think the devil drives a Coupe de Ville.
I watched 'em drive away over the hill,
Not against her will, an' I've got time to kill,
      Down in Brokenheartsville.

It was long on chrome, sittin' in the lot.
An' fire engine red, that thing was hot.
He revved it up, she waved goodbye.
Well, love's gone to hell and so have I.

The Impossible (Back to Top)

Written by Kelley Lovelace and Lee Thomas Miller.
(©  EMI April Music Inc. / Didn't Have To Be Music / Mosaic Music)
From "Man With A Memory" © 2002.

My dad chased monsters from the dark,
He checked underneath my bed.
An' he could lift me with one arm,
Way up over top his head.
He could loosen rusty bolts,
With a quick turn of his wrench.
He pulled splinters from his hand,
And never even flinched.
In thirteen years I'd never seen him cry,
But the day that grandpa died, I realized:

      Unsinkable ships sink.
      Unbreakable walls break.
Sometimes the things you think could never happen,
      Happen just like that.
      Unbendable steel bends.
If the fury of the wind is unstoppable,
      I've learned to never underestimate,
      The impossible.

An' then there was my junior year,
Billy had a brand new car.
It was late, the road was wet,
I guess the curve was just too sharp.
I walked away without a scratch.
They brought the helicopter in.
An' Billy couldn't feel his legs.
Said he'd never walk again.
But Billy said he would and his Mom and daddy prayed,
And the day we graduated, he stood up to say:

      "Unsinkable ships sink.
      "Unbreakable walls break.
"Sometimes the things you think could never happen,
      "Happen just like that.
      "Unbendable steel bends.
"If the fury of the wind is unstoppable,
      "I've learned to never underestimate,
      "The impossible."

So don't tell me that it's over.
Don't give up on you and me.
'Cuz there's no such thing as hopeless,
            If you believe:

      Unsinkable ships sink.
      Unbreakable walls break.
Sometimes the things you think could never happen,
      Happen just like that.
      Unbendable steel bends.
If the fury of the wind is unstoppable,
      I've learned to never underestimate,
      The impossible. (Back to Top)

Man With A Memory (Back to Top)

Written by - Charlie Black & Rory Michael Bourke
From - "Man with a Memory"

Ol' Johnny's got a heart of gold
Ask anyone around here
But some nights his eyes are far away
And filled with tears
Sweet Mary Lou's just as good as they come
With a weakness for all the wrong men
From the look on her face tonight
She's been wrong again
Bartender's thinkin' to himself
As he rubs his towel around a glass

Thinkin' 'bout the man with a mem'ry
And the woman with a past
Lost souls on life's highway
Forever lookin' back
When you're livin' for the love
And the love doesn't last
You get a man with a mem'ry
A woman with a past

Bartender turns the TV down
Cranks that ol' jukebox up
Carefully selects which buttons to push
For what each song does
C-23 after J-19, it's a tonic for a broken heart
A little Stardust in the mix
It's a fine, fine art
Dim the lights a notch or two
The next round is on the house

For the man with a mem'ry
And the woman with a past
Lost souls on life's highway
Forever lookin' back
When you're livin' for the love
And the love doesn't last
You get a man with a mem'ry
A woman with a past

Oh, we've all got somethin' we've got to get around
Now and then you get the chance to help the lost get found

Stackin' chairs and sweepin' up
He can't help a little smile

Now there's a man with a mem'ry
There's a woman with a past
Lost souls on life's highway
Forever lookin' back
When you're livin' for the love
And the love doesn't last
You get a man with a mem'ry
A woman with a past. (Back to Top)

Joe's Place (Back to Top)

There's a place called Joe's
Where some of us go
When the hard working day is through
Through the neon and smoke
We laugh and tell jokes
And throw down a cold one or two
There's a jukebox full of records
By Willie, Haggard and Jones
There's a picture of Elvis and ol' John Wayne
Hanging side by side on the wall

Chorus:
Down at Joe's place
It's still the old way
Pickled eggs in a jar
And a blue ribbon sign
Ol' boy and bankers
Sitting side by side
Down at Joe's place
Down at Joe's place

Along about midnight
A few hangers on
Are we hanging out at the bar
If the telephone rings
It's an understood thing
Joe don't know where they are
At a table in the corner
There's a young man and an empty chair
His head in his hands, tears in his eyes
And a girlfriend's ring lying there. (Back to Top)

If Nobody Believed In You (Back to Top)

I watched him take the two strike call
He hadn't tried to swing at all.
I guess he'd had all that he could take,
He walked away, for goodness sake.
His father's voice was loud an' mean:
"You won't amount to anything."

That little boy quit tryin',
He just walked away.
There were teardrops on his face.
Tell me, how would you feel?
You'd probably give up too,
If nobody believed in you.

That old man said: "One more try,
"I know I'm not too old to try.
"I promise, son, I'll do my best,
"This time, I'm gonna pass the test."
"Give me the keys, Dad, an' get in."
His father never drove again.

That old man quit tryin',
He just turned away.
An' there were teardrops on his face.
Tell me, how would you feel?
You'd probably give up too,
If nobody believed in you.

We take His name out of schools.
The lawyers say it breaks the rules.
Pledge of allegiance can't be writ,
An' under God, should not be said.
I wonder how He will take.
I just pray it's not too late.

What if God quit tryin',
He just turned away?
There were teardrops on his face?
Tell me, how would you feel?
You'd probably give up too,
If nobody believed in you.

Tell me, how would you feel?
You'd probably give up too,
If nobody believed in you. (Back to Top)

Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off (Back to Top)

She said: "I’m going out with my girlfriends.
"Margharitas at the Holiday Inn."
Oh, have mercy, my only thought,
Was Tequila makes her clothes fall off.

I told her: "Put an extra layer on."
I know what happens when she drinks Patron.
Her closet's missin' half the things she bought
Yeah, Tequila makes her clothes fall off.

She’ll start by kicking out of her shoes,
Lose an ear-ring in her drink.
Leave her jacket in the bathroom stall
Drop a contact down the sink.
Them pantyhose aint gonna last too long,
If the DJ puts Bon Jovi on.
She might come home in a table cloth
Yeah, Tequila makes her clothes fall off.
Oh oh.

She can handle any champagne brunch:
A bridal shower with Bacardi punch.
Jello shooters full of Smirnoff,
But Tequila makes her clothes fall off.

She’ll start by kicking out of her shoes,
Lose an ear-ring in her drink.
Leave her jacket in the bathroom stall:
Drop a contact down the sink.

She don’t mean nothin', she's just havin fun.
Tomorrow she say: "Oh, what have I done?"
Her friends will joke about the stuff she lost
Yeah, Tequila makes her clothes fall off.
Oh, Tequila makes her clothes fall off.
Oh, Tequila makes her clothes fall off.. (Back to Top)

That Would Be Her   (Back to Top)

Have you ever seen a river ragin' in the spring
Rushin' down a mountain fast as anything
Well, if you can picture that wild water
That would be her, only deeper
Have you ever seen an eagle soaring high above the trees
Circling the world below the epitome of free
Then you could imagine how I feel when I'm beside her
Only higher

I'm flying, I'm falling, I'm floating
And all I want to do is hold her
Closer and spend every day that passes
Thinkin' up new ways to love her more

If you've never had a vision
Of what perfect love would be
Just close your eyes and dream a dream
That just gets sweeter, an' that would be her

I'm flying, I'm falling, I'm floating
And all I want to do is hold her
Closer and spend every day that passes
Thinkin' up new ways to love her more

If you've never had a vision
Of what a perfect love would be
Just close your eyes and dream a dream
That just gets sweeter, an' that would be her

Just close your eyes and dream a dream
That just gets sweeter, an' that would be her. (Back to Top)

Cool To Be A Fool (Back to Top)

Here I sit a nobody with no one
Bein' me ain't really all that fun
Leavin' her wasn't very smart
Admittin' I was wrong wouldn't be so hard

If it was cool to be a fool
I'd be the hippest guy around
If a heartache made you famous
I'd be known from town to town
If tears were made of pennies
And a cold beer brought her back
My bank account and self esteem
Would both be in the black
If some Hollywood producer made a movie that was sad
About some guy who lost the best thing he ever had
Hey, I could be a star
If it was cool to be a fool

But we all know the way it really is
You don't get recognized for doin' things like this
You spend a lotta time feelin' sorry for yourself
It doesn't really mean that much to anybody else

If it was cool to be a fool
I'd be the hippest guy around
If a heartache made you famous
I'd be known from town to town
If tears were made of pennies
And a cold beer brought her back
My bank account and self esteem
Would both be in the black
If some Hollywood producer made a movie that was sad
About some guy who lost the best thing he ever had
Hey, I could be a star
If it was cool to be a fool

Hey, I could be a star
If it was cool to be a fool. (Back to Top)

Everything's a Thing   (Back to Top)

Well I hit the snooze when the alarm clock rings
Layin' there doin' that sleepy head thing
There's a bird out my window spreadin' his wings
Cheap chirp doin' that singin'
Thing I do when I first get up is that coffe thing in my favorite cup
Two gets me goin' got things to do
Let me tell you a thing or two

Everything's a thing is you know what I mean
Can't do nothin' 'cause there's no such thing
Some things are big, some things are small
Some mean a lot, some nothin' at all
It's all laid out in the scheme of things
No matter what it is
Everything's a thing

Off to work in my old Mustang
Doin' that bumper to bumper thing
Up ahead a ring a ling ding ding
Some guy's doin' that cell phone thing
Thing is the light's turned green and he ain't doin' that drivin' thing
And the thing is about all this that talkin' thing and drivin' don't mix

Everything's a thing is you know what I mean
Can't do nothin' 'cause there's no such thing
Some things are big, some things are small
Some mean a lot, some nothin' at all
It's all laid out in the scheme of things
No matter what it is
Everything's a thing

If you think this song ain't worth hummin'
You got another thing comin'. (Back to Top)

Leave The Past Behind (Back to Top)

From - "Six of One Half Dozen of the Other"

Sittin in this old honky tonk in Tulsa
Trying to drink a memory off my mind
But if she only knew how much I loved her
She would be here by my side
It seems I spend a lot of time talking to myself
I even count the shadows on the wall
I guess there's a lesson to be learned in this
You never get to high that you cant take the fall

Now folks think I'm going crazy
Just because I've lost my mind
What will it take to ever save me
To finally leave the past behind

I wonder what she's doing back in Tennessee
And do I ever really cross her mind
She's probably out with all of her old friends
Sippin and toastin champagne and wine
And do you think she will ever speak to me
Or do you think she even gives a damn
I know she would learn a lesson from all of this
What goes up must come down

No folks think I'm going crazy
Just because I lost my mind
What will it ever take to save me
To finally leave the past behind

What will it ever take to save me
To finally leave the past behind

If I could leave the past behind

But folks think I'm going crazy
What's it gonna take to save me
If I could leave the past behind. (Back to Top)

She Only Smokes When She Drinks   (Back to Top)

From - "Man with a Memory"

So you lit her cigarette
You're feelin' pretty good
You think you've got a shot
Most girls, you prob'ly would
Yeah, this is that kind of place
But she ain't that kind of girl
You're readin' it all wrong

Chorus:
She only smokes when she drinks
She only drinks now and then
Now and then when she's tired
Of bein' let down by men
You can give her a light
But it's not what you think
And she only smokes when she drinks

Did you ask her to dance
Let me guess, she told you no
Got to take her some place quiet
And see how far that goes
Oh, don't take it all that hard
When she smiles and turns you down
For a complicated girl
She ain't that hard to figure out. (Back to Top)
